Summary Ride Description:   Starts in Utah - Arches Natl. Park, Escalante Natl. Bryce Canyon, and Red Canyon. Heading back to Dallas TX

Detailed Ride Description:

Okay so its not a local ride, but still worth seeing.
Start at Moab Utah. Get there anyway you want. US 550 out of Albuquerque through Durango, Ouray and the Million Dollar Highway to Ridgeway, left on State 62 to State 145 to State 90 which becomes State 46 in Utah, US 191 north to Moab is a good route. If you have more time, turn left (southeast) when you reach State 145, follow it to Dolores then left on State 184 to US 491 to US 191 to Moab.

While in Moab see the Arches National Park (www.nps.gov/arch). $5 entry fee for motorcycles. From the Arches, turn right (north) on US 191 to I-70. West on I-70 past Green River to State 24. NOTE: Check your gas. Top off in Green River no matter what your guage says. This section of I-70 from Green River to I-15 is the most desolate piece of interstate in the entire interstate system. Follow State 24 to Torrey (Gas stop. Dont want to take chances out here.), through Capitol Reef National Park (www.np.gov/care). Take time to stop. Left (south) on State 12 at Torrey. Watch your mirrors for a beautiful sight as you climb out of Torrey. Follow State 12 through the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument. One park ranger told me that this is the most beautiful road in Utah. I think he is correct. You want to be at Bryce Canyon in the afternoon and sunset if possible.

The park road is on the west side of the canyon so you want the sun at your back when you are viewing it. Cheaper motels are available on State 12 before you get to the Canyon turn-off and on past the turn-off before you reach US 89. If you spend the night in Maob, see the Arches and take the 6 hour ride to Bryce Canyon (you have to stop for a lot of pictures so it may take a little longer) you will have time to find a motel room and still be at Bryce Canyon for the late afternoon/sunset viewing.

The next morning continue west on State 12 through Red Canyon. With the sunrise behind you the red cliffs of this canyon will be beautiful. If you have time, stop at Red Canyon for a hike into the part of the canyon unseen from the highway. At US 89 turn south. From here you can either take State 9 west through Zion National Park at Mt. Carmel Junction or continue south on US 89 to US 89A and go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Pay attention in Kanab. US 89 goes left. You go straight towards Fredonia on a road marked "TO US 89A" - I didnt write down the number, it may have been State 389 - but it is clearly marked as TO US 89A. At Lake Jacob turn south on State 67 to the North Rim. Its 45 miles to the North Rim, so you may want to top off at the gas station at Lake Jacob. Walk through the lodge to the viewing areas below the lodge. Much of State 67 is 45 mph so expect to take a hour getting to and getting back from the north rim.

Back to Lake Jacob, its 55 miles to Bitter Springs where US 89A rejoins US 89. There is a wonderful overlook of the Vermilion Cliffs and the desert valley below - in which you will be riding. The only gas stop is almost to US 89 in Marble Canyon - another reason to have topped off at Lake Jacob either on the way in or out. The desert floor is hot, shadeless and desolate - no place for a breakdown. Carry extra water.
From US 89 you can go to Flagstaff or turn west on State 64 to go to the south rim and Grand Canyon Village. From Flagstaff you are two day out of Dallas on I-40.
